Gaming startup, Smaaash, raises Rs 90 cr through syndication

Smaaash, an entertainment and gaming startup backed by Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, has recently raised Rs 90 crore in equity financing through a syndication deal. Less than a month ago, the company had raised Rs 25 crore from the consumer focused investment venture firm, Sixth Sense.

The latest round of funding, which was organized by Avendus Wealth Management, the wealth management arm of Avendus Capital, saw participation from a number of high net worth individuals. The names of the investors, however, have not been disclosed.

“In the current year, with two back to back acquisitions, we have cemented our place as the player in
the active entertainment space. The equity raise will only accelerate our growth plans to provide world class sports and immersive experiences in India” said Shripal Morakhia, the founder of Smaaash, in a statement. Morakhia, who is also a client of Avendus Wealth Management, has reportedly invested an undisclosed amount in the latest round.

Smaaash was founded by Morakhia in 2012. The company owns and operates digital entertainment centres across the country offering sports like cricket, football, go-karting and bowling in addition to virtual gaming centres in over 30 centres across India, US, China, and the Middle East. They also have music and dining facilities at the centres in Noida, Gurugram, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, and Ludhiana. The shareholders of the company include Tendulkar, the sports-focused investment firm, Fidelis World and BCCL.
