The newest solution thought up and brought forward for fighting the Zika virus, comes from
WeRobotics, a startup founded by Adam Klaptocz and involves drones.
“The main goal is vector control to eliminate infectious disease,” Klaptocz said to Digital Trends.
“Suppressing mosquito population can be done with fumigation or insecticide, but both these
techniques are damaging to the environment, and insects are developing immunity to this.
Releasing sterilized mosquitoes does not damage the environment. Using a drone to release
the mosquitos can scale the impact of the technique by allowing release over larger areas in a
more efficient manner compared to ground-based release.”
The concept of the solution is to use drones to transport sterile mosquitoes that have been
previously bred in seclusion, to areas with the mosquito populations. The hope is that the sterile
mosquitoes, outnumbering the fertile, wild mosquitoes, will join the competition for the same
females, reducing the mosquito population dramatically and posing a possible solution to
mosquito-borne viruses.
The WeRobotics team is currently in preparation for their first testing of the idea in the real
world. The project has involved a series of testing in order to make their idea come to life. One
hurdle was being able to pack a lot of mosquitos into a drone, which they solved by finding a
temperature at which mosquitoes will fall asleep, making it easier to pack and transport larger
numbers at a time. They also had to research ways to distribute the mosquitoes once the got to
the right location.
“We have done a lot of lab testing at the IAEA labs in Vienna using live mosquitos to
demonstrate the viability of the mosquitos after they’ve run through our device,” Klaptocz said.
“The next phase of the project includes field tests in South America, where we can measure the
dispersion rate of the mosquitos when released from the drone. We hope to be doing these
tests early next year.”
Previous proposed methods to fight the Zika virus has included vaccines among some less
typical methods.
