As part of the ‘Startup Coast’project in Karnataka, a new incubation centre in Mallikatte was opened and unveiled by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. The Centre for Entrepreneurship Opportunities and Learning will seat up to 70 entrepreneurs.
“Mangalore and the Dakshin Kannada region have more than 20 colleges offering engineering, medicine and other fields of study,” Sitharaman said. “This a fertile ground for talent and we need to nurture it.”30 seats in the new incubation centre, which was set up to encourage entrepreneurship and the Startup India initiative, have already been reserved.
The Startup Coast project in Karnataka was launched by Sitharaman when she held the position of Commerce and Industry Minister through partial funding from the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme fund (MPLADS). Through the project, incubation centres, innovation centres, tinkering labs and co-working spaces were all proposed by Sitharaman.
“Exactly a year back, I started on the path to make this region the Startup Coast and in less than a year we have made some great strides,” Sitharaman said. “The centre has launched, schools will get tinkering labs and colleges will get Centres of Excellence.” The project will help create a thriving startup ecosystem and encourage employment opportunities.
