Bengaluru-based early stage venture capital firm, 3one4 Capital announced that it has raised Rs 250 crore for its second fund thereby surpassing its initial expectations. According to a statement released by the firm, the round witnessed participation from prominent investors like Reliance Ventures, Narayana Murthy and Nandan Nilekani (Co-founders of Infosys), Ranjan Pai (CEO of Manipal Education and Medical Group) amongst others.
The fund had an initial target corpus of Rs. 150 crore, when it initiated fundraising last year. However once the fund was fully subscribed within a quarter of the fund-raise and there appeared to be continued interest in the fund, the Fund Managers decided to exercise a green shoe option to raise an additional Rs. 100 crore.
The firm aims to utilise the corpus of Rs 250 crore toward engaging with a greater number of companies, continuing to focus on early stage startups with cheque sizes between $ 250,000 to $2 million and a reserve for follow on funding.
“Our first fund was completely private capital. It was a general partner led fund,” said Pranav Pai, Co-founder of 3one4 Capital. He also stated that the general partners of the firm remain the biggest investors in the second fund as well. “Everyone else has come in meaningfully. Overall it is an interesting participation of new people.”
The venture capital firm was co-founded by Pranav Pai and Siddarth Pai, who are the sons of the prominent angel investor and former Infosys CFO, TV Mohandas Pai. The 3one4 Capital Fund I was launched in 2016 with a corpus of Rs 100 crore and since then the fund has built an extensive portfolio of investments by investing in 40+ startups including Faircent.com, OnlineTyari, Tracxn, and Charmboard.
The focus areas of the fund are diverse and include machine driven actionable intelligence services for the enterprise, enterprise automation, ambient intelligence technologies, ed-tech, fin-tech, media and content development and health-focused ventures.
While Nandan Nilekani has invested in the fund via his family office, Narayana Murthy chose to invest via Catamaran Ventures. S. Kris Gopalakrishnan and SD Shibulal, who are also co-founders of Infosys, have invested in the fund in a personal capacity.
“Our first fund has performed well. Out of around 40 companies, 30 have already closed their subsequent rounds. We have had two exits so far. All of this is within 18 months…It was easy to close our first Rs. 150 crore ….we then spent time to pick people for our remaining Rs100 crore. We picked people we grew up respecting,” said Pranav Pai.
