Catering startup, Zesty, sells parts of company to financial services company, Square Inc

San Francisco-based Zesty, a catering and food-based startup has been purchased by Square in a recent deal.

Since its founding in 2013 by Chris Hollindale and David Langer, Zesty has collaborated with approximately 150 restaurants throughout San Francisco. Square Inc, which is also based in San Francisco is a fintech company which provides users with a mobile payment platform.

Zesty is not the first startup of its kind to be purchased by the financial services company, with Square having purchased Caviar in 2014 and OrderAhead last year.

Both startups are also based in San Francisco with Caviar providing users with a food delivery service and OrderAhead providing users with a service to order food via a mobile app before picking it up themselves.

“Adding Zesty’s offerings, like sophisticated menu-planning tools and algorithms, white-glove catering services, and nutrition and allergen customisation, will help us expand our catering offering and even better serve companies of all sizes,” Caviar said via Medium. “Plus, it provides our restaurant partners with more opportunities to reach new corporate customers.

Square plans to use and incorporate aspects of Zesty’s services into those offered by Caviar, specifically for the latter’s service called, ‘Caviar for Teams.’ The company also plans to use aspects of OrderAhead in launching of new services for Caviar.

Zesty, which only has a presence in the city of San Francisco so far, has raised venture funding worth $20.7 million in the past.

“Expanding our corporate catering product with Zesty enables us to offer our restaurant partners another way to boost sales through higher-margin, large-format catering orders,” Gokul Rajaram, Caviar Lead at Square said in a statement. “Caviar is thriving, and we’re excited to supercharge its success with Zesty and double down on an area with great opportunity to drive more growth for our business.”
