Planted Foods raises $18 mn investment for its meat alternative products

Zurich-based food processing startup, Planted Foods, raises new investment round worth $18 million.

The startup develops meat alternative products made out of different plant proteins and fibers, such as from peas. The alternative products resemble the meat they are imitating in taste and texture. Planted Foods also mold the products to resemble traditional meat or fish.

“Our newly launched planted.pulled consists of sunflower, oat and yellow pea proteins, changing both structure and taste to resemble pulled pork rather than chicken,” Christoph Jenny, Co-Founder at Planted Foods said to TechCrunch. “The great thing about the sunflower proteins, they are upcycled from sunflower oil production. Hence, we are establishing a circular economy approach.”

Investors in the Series A investment round include Vorwerk Ventures, Blue Horizon Ventures and Yann Sommer, among others.

The startup has established a presence in Switzerland, Germany and Austria so far, and has future plans for expansion, both geographically and in products and services.

“The funding will be used to expand our tech stack, to commercialize our prime cuts that are currently produced at lab scale,” Jenny said, as reported by TechCrunch “On the manufacturing side we look to significantly increase our current capacity of half a ton per hour to serve the increasing demand coming from international markets, first in neighboring countries and then further into Europe and overseas.”

Planet Foods was founded in 2019 by Jenny, Eric Stirnemann, Lukas Böni and Pascal Bieri, and works with restaurants, among other partnerships.
