In recent years, the food service industry has seen the introduction of a new idea, robots built
for kitchen-based tasks, which could impact the service industry. The robots would help
companies be cost-efficient and more productive, with the idea already having popularity in
Asian countries such as China.

As reported by Wired, here are six robots that are working in the food service industry.
Gordon, in Cafe X – Built by Mitsubishi, Gordon is the name given to a robotic arm that works at
Cafe X, making espresso and coffee beverages. The cafe has been functional in San Francisco
in January and is the second of it’s kind in the world, with the first being fully functional in Hong
Kong.

Sally, by Chowbotics – Sally is a robotic salad maker filled with chopped ingredients in 21
compartments which can then be combined by the robot to make over 1,000 different salads.
Sally, having been fully functional since April, was created By Chowbotics, a California-based
startup.

Zume Pizza, in Silicon Valley – With the use of predictive analystics, Zume Pizza has created a
kitchen in which robots make pizzas which are then delivered via smart ovens, keeping the
pizzas hot. The robots can make the entire pizza all the way from prepping the pizza dough, to
rolling out crusts, putting on sauce and taking it in and out of oven.
Spyce Kitchen, in MIT – Spyce Kitchen is a mini-automatic kitchen for college students. Created
by students at MIT, the innovation consists of a robot which can cook full meals in five minutes
or less.

Koya and Kona, Toyako Shanghai – Since being launched in 2015, two ‘twin robots’ in Toyako,
Shanghai have been boiling water, cooking noodles and combining them with broth, meat,
veggies and eggs to make ramen for customers in a restaurant. The robots need less than two
minutes for each bowl of ramen.

Momentum Machine – Momentum Machine is a company yet to release its robotic cook, which
can grill 400 burgers per hour. The robot does not have a confirmed location, but talks have
directed toward San Francisco.
