Floyd, a furniture making startup hoping to improve the entire experience surrounding the purchase of new furniture, has raised its Series A funding round.
Founded in 2013 by Kyle Hoff and Alex O’Dell, Lloyd has a presence in 50 countries, according to the company’s website.
“It doesn’t matter where you are in the world, the culture of consuming and disposing of furniture is a problem & we’re working to solve it,” Hoff told TechCrunch
The recent funding round which brought in $5.6 million saw participation from La-Z-Boy, Beringea, 14w, and Endeavor. Funds raised by the Detroit-based startup will be put toward expansion and new products by the company. The startup has plans to move its headquarters into a new location at Eastern Market District, one which will provide the company with 3,500 sq. ft. of space.
“For instance, Charles & Ray Eames developed a molded chair that not only has remained relevant for over a half of a century but has also been a product that’s lasted that long,” Hoff said about the furniture industry in Michigan. “You see their products in schools, you see them in Victorian homes, & you see them in modern homes — it’s a design sensibility that considers the lifetime of a product and the changing lifestyles around them. Being in Detroit has put us in the backyard of a century of tacit knowledge around design & furniture production.”
The company has two current products on the market, the first of which, a table leg, was released in a kickstarter campaign which brought in $256,000 in 2014. The second product, a bed frame was launched in 2015 and the campaign brought in $123,000.
According to Floyd’s website, the startup sees its largest consumer base in urban areas such as New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo.
The company’s newest product which is set to be launched in 2018 due to the recent funding round is a side table influenced by the company’s currently ‘Floyd table.’
